The book has detailed statistics on which regions had what kind of enrollment in schools/universities, and says that 98% Indians were literate, and that all castes and parts of society had access to an education. It also details what kind of subjects they learnt and such.

(Dharampal was a Gandhian and did masses of research in indian history using archived records).Choxboxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03741540918529448553noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27389926.post-75340584079834571632012-10-24T05:07:09.304-07:002012-10-24T05:07:09.304-07:00Chox and Satishes, maybe collective effort will wo...Chox and Satishes, maybe collective effort will work and the lib will get a copy?!

utbt - re the segregation of 'subjects', agree with what you've said. Even a few centuries ago, when kings were patrons, there were scholars who were historians, poets, musicians, mathematicians all rolled into one. The struggle to earn a living changed that, I guess. Wonder what the education system was like before the British came to India...Arundhatihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18175971860205359849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27389926.post-59094606688421409832012-10-23T18:48:51.287-07:002012-10-23T18:48:51.287-07:00Wow..this is a book which my ten year old and me w...Wow..this is a book which my ten year old and me would love to read ! ranjani.sathishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10450770799790366871noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27389926.post-44976575172284224272012-10-23T09:29:54.121-07:002012-10-23T09:29:54.121-07:00@Chox, interesting! May be people then thought of learning as acquiring knowledge and saw everything as connected as opposed to subjects?!

@Satish: This book being imported, is expensive in Indian standards. I consider this book as 'library inventory'. Is there a way your local library would take in book recommendations?

@Sheela: Absolutely! The book could have been just about measuring the Earth. Would have made it tighter.

@Sandhya,Praba thanks.utbtkidshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12791019398394849577noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27389926.post-67902047429801122412012-10-23T08:48:52.210-07:002012-10-23T08:48:52.210-07:00Interesting Math and History inter-twined there!
