But ultimately as parents (I have a 4 year old and a 7 year old) we need to teach our children to live in a complex world. If all we expose them to is a sanitized version of life and reality, then they will be poorly prepared to face the real world" - something that I've always believed in. There's an old Tamil saying that goes - kalavum kattru mara. Its important for kids to know the other side too. Your c...Glad to know you enjoyed reading, Sheela.

Your comment on fantasy reminds of something that happened watching a Broadway show - P realised the chimney sweep was able to "fly" because he had strings attached, but he still thinks Mary Poppins used magic to fly. As long as he didn't see the strings, he could believe in magic! As we grow older, we lose that ability. Then we grow up and believe again in the power of the unseen!Arundhatihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18175971860205359849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27389926.post-72908633235719803892012-10-29T11:33:29.665-07:002012-10-29T11:33:29.665-07:00"If all we expose them to is a sanitized vers..."If all we expose them to is a sanitized version of life and reality, then they will be poorly prepared to face the real world. Right?
I hear stories every single day from local people in my neighborhood who are building workers, maids etc. I find their impromptu, casual real-life narrative in the local vernacular most fascinating! :) Storytelling is a common fabric/connecting thread of Indian culture. :)

Stories as a parenting/teaching tool - yes, agree completely! Dr.Seuss was really good at that. Lorax is our favorite too! :)

"untether my imagination" - my favorite part! :) And some wonderful advice there on writing.

Thank you for this lovely conversation, Arundhati and Nathan!
